Origin Story

In college, Lawrence bounced around a few different majors trying to figure out his direction in life. Eventually landing in Music, with a minor in Accounting, studying the String Bass. He quickly became known as "Larry the Bass Guy."

While a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho, he took advantage of many different student leadership opportunities including serving as an I-Teams Leader Mentor, a section leader, and a new student mentor.

At work, Lawrence found himself moving into leadership positions rather quickly and was provided many growth and mentorship opportunities.

One day, as graduation was approaching, Lawrence was reflecting on his next steps. He had some concerns with the company he was working for and realized that the future career he was planning with them would not work out.

While driving to work, he heard an interview on the radio with John Maxwell. In this interview, Dr. Maxwell was talking about mentoring businesses and being a business coach. He specifically was talking about communication practices. This resonates with Lawrence because communication was a big issue with the job he currently had.

For more on this story, check out this video below from a keynote presentation he has given.

So what was the problem?

The Shoulder Devil

Despite being inspired by Dr. Maxwell, immediately his shoulder devil jumped up to remind him that he wasn't smart enough to coach or mentor anyone. Who would listen to him?

So as quickly as he was inspired, Lawrence dropped the idea. Well... mostly.

The idea had been planted, so he needed to do something about it. Being fueled by a new found desire to read and grow, he started finding opportunities. Every time he went in for a job interview, he had two questions he would ask.

1) What books are recommended reading to excel at this job?
2) When mentoring and growth opportuities are available?

Don't judge my video too harshly. I was still figuring things out.

Seeking Opportunities to mentor leads to

Career Successes

Eventually, Lawrence ended up in retail management working for Payless Shoe Source as a store manager. When he started, he was informed that his store was one of the highest shrink (theft) stores in Utah, and was in danger of being closed. He was able to not only reduce the shrink, but get the store profitable again. He this eventually led to his promotion. A multi-store manager. The second store he was given was THE highest shrink store in Utah, and was also in danger of closing. He took it from the worst performing store in the district, to a top 5 position. But long hours and no days off (a model that eventually bankrupted the whole chain) took their toll and he went back to commission sales.

Commission Sales Pays Off With

CarMax

As a sales consultant with CarMax in South Jordan, UT, he learned a lot about listening to his customers and understanding their needs. He wanted to make sure he wasn't just selling them a car, but improving their situation.

While at CarMax is where he first discovered professional networking through BNI.

As a member of the X-Factor chapter, he found himself surrounded by people who were of an elevated mindset. He knew that the associations he would get there would help him continue to elevate his life, enabling him to influence and serve at a higher level.

Lawrence's Returns to Idaho for

Fatt Larry's Customs

Lawrence was learning a lot about the automotive industry and had risen to the Presidents Club status with CarMax. In the meantime, his dad, Larry, quite his job in the technology world, to pursue his passion of car restoration. He included a little used car lot to help him out.

One day, when Lawrence was visiting, he was inspired to move back to Idaho and help his dad with this new adventure. He talked to Melissa about it, and, after a lot of prayer and discussion, they decided the time had come to return to Idaho. They would move back about 6 months later.

Lawrence would help take over sales and marketing (including joining a new BNI chapter). He would also help work on restoration projects. A year later they needed to move to a bigger location. Within about three year, Lawrence had helped Fatt Larry's Customs 10x their revenue.

As much as Lawrence enjoyed classic cars and working with his dad, he felt that it was time for a change. But what was that change supposed to be?

At some point, Lawrence met

Kirk Duncan

Their meeting just happened by chance. Lawrence and Melissa moved from Idaho to Utah in December of 2010. They happened to be going to the same church as Kirk. Lawrence started doing some volunteer work, and when he showed up, there was Kirk. They began getting to know each other and developing a friendship. Once Lawrence found out Kirk was a "business coach" he became very elated to know him.

They would have some amazing conversations and Lawrence would appreciate knowing Kirk more and more through the years. He would attend many of his events, purchase his audio presentations, and subscribe to his online classes.

Late in the year 2019, I saw Kirk was hosting a webinar taking about his coaching business. Lawrence still had this thought in the back of his head asking, "will it ever happen? Will I ever be a business coach?"

As Lawrence whitness Kirk's inspiring presentation, he heard state, "It's time for you to start your coaching business!"

Upon hearing this Lawrence exclaimed out loud, "It is time to start my coaching business. I'm ready." Since that first moment he thught of it, he had been educating himself, growing his mental strength, and seeking opportunities to mentor and create.

And The Bassic Trainer was born!

Jumping into a coaching program

Coach Fast Track

Kirk shared about his new program to help people get their coaching business started, which included mentoring call with him. I immediately sent my information and a couple of days later I was on the phone with his son Kody.

Kody got me enrolled in the program and I found a new level of energy and excitement as I got started.

Coach Fast Track included licensing to teach certain lessons developed by Kirk, training and materials for creating your own coaching program, marketing training, and mindset building. Plus phone calls with Kirk and other members of his team to guide you through the process.

Going Full circle, back to

Dr. John Maaxwell

Lawrence was learning a lot of great lessons with Kirk and his team at 3 Key Elements, but he wanted some additional focus on being a business coach.

Then he stumbled upon the Maxwell Leadership Team. Instantly, Lawrence knew he wanted to be a Maxwell Certified Leadership Team member.

This certifiecation included some adidtional great training as a mentor, trainer, and speaker. While attending the training conference in Orlando, FL, he learned a montra that left a perminant impression:

"I am a person of value, who values people, and adds value to them"

Lawerence has made adding value to people a primary focus on The Bassic Trainer. He even tells people, "If I can't add value to you, don't ever hire me for anything else."

As he ahs continued his growth and devlopment journey, he has attended events and taken classes featuring the teaching of other business leaders including Grant Cardone, Gino Wickman, James Clear, Tony Robbins, and many more.

He was even a Golden Ticket winning in Grant Cardone's "The Great American Speak-Off."

Continuing to Network

To Add Value To Businesses

Lawrence's efforts to add value to businesses included participating in organizations like the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, BNI, and Toastmasters International.

One day, Lawrence decided that he didn't feel like BNI was serving the professional Networking needs of Eastern Idaho. One day he was talking to his friend, and former client, Charles Tea about his desire to start his own networking groups. One in Idaho Falls and One in Rexburg just to get it going, but that eventually he would like to have multiple chapters throughout Eastern Idaho. Charles then introduced him to the Executive Networking Referral Group (ENRG). Lawrence loved that platform and felt like he had found the right path to be building. Together with Charles, in 2025, they started these first two ENRG chapters, and are looking forward to starting more.

What About Lawrence's Book

Our Story[s]

"Our Story[s]: The Unique Stories of a Husband and Wife's Journey Through Child Loss" was published in September of 2025. He co-authored with his wife Melissa.

Back in 2012, Melissa was in car accident that took the life of their 2-year-old daughter, Ethne. A few years later, in 2017, they had a son, Thomas, who was born still.

For a long time they talked about writing a book sharing their struggles and experiences dealing with child loss. Their hope is that their story will inspire others to keep going forward in the face of loss. They also hope to show couples how their marriage can survive losing a child. They have even developed a keynote presentation to share together with other couples at marriage and family events.

They started writing "Our Story[s]" over three years ago. Even before the famous webinar that inspired Lawrence to start his coaching business.

What about

Boss Level Adulting

Formerly known as "Building the Life of Your Dreams," Boss Level adulting is a book and online course that Lawrence is currently building. It's based on lesson he wished he knew as a college student just getting started.

This will be the first in a series of "Boss Level" books that Lawrence plans on publishing.

He also plans on building an online education experience for rising leaders and entrepreneurs. He hopes that people will use these courses to help alleviate many of the fears that come with starting your own business.

Communicating with others through

DISC

Lawrence is also a Certified DISC Behavioral Consultant.  He loves using DISC to help businesses communicate and grow better. With DISC, employees can understand their own communication styles and preferences, but also learn how to identify those styles with others. This deepens their connection with coworkers and customer.

A Little More About Lawrence

Lawrence grew up in the small town of St. Anthony, ID. There he learned the importance of family, faith, and work ethic. After graduating high school, he took advantage of an opportunity to serve a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Mexico Chihuahua Mission. There he was able to experience a new culture, learn Spanish, and learned to love and value people right away.

After his mission, he went to school at Brigham Young University-Idaho, eventually landing on a degree in Music (String Bass) with a minor in Accounting. It was while in college that he learned about personal development and growth. One of the first books he read was a recommendation from his Bass professor (Aaron Miller) - "The Talent Code."

While in school he met and married his wife, Melissa (Humphrey). Their daughter, Ethne, was born while they were still students and she quickly because the life of the music department. Upon graduating in 2010, Lawrence and Melissa (then pregnant with their 2nd child) moved to Utah where Melissa wanted to complete her student teaching (for music education). It was right after they moved to Utah when Lawrence was first introduced to Kirk Duncan.

A little over a year later, Melissa was in the car accident that took the life of their daughter, Ethne. This moment reinforced into Lawrence the importance of journaling and meditation as part of his personal development. That experience taught him more about who he was as a father, husband, man of faith, and member of his community than any other experience ever could have. Those lessons were again reinforced in 2017 with the stillbirth of their son Thomas.

Today, Lawrence and Melissa have been married for 17 years. They have four children, in addition to their angel babies. Ages range from 14 to 5. Being a father is Lawrence's favorite thing in the world. His primary motivation to succeed is to create experiences for his family.

In 2021, Melissa chose to return to school and become a licensed nail technician. She currently offers the best pedicures in the state of Idaho (maybe in the world). Book your appointment here to find out!
